In depth

AI Overviews are the AI-generated answer summaries Google places at the very top of many search results. They pull an answer together from multiple sources and cite the pages they used, often answering the question before a searcher ever reaches the classic blue links.

If you've searched something lately and seen a paragraph of answer with a few links tucked beside it, above the normal results, that's an AI Overview. Google explains the feature in its Search Help.

What this changes for SEO

The page that answers the question best now has more leverage than the page that simply ranks first, because Overviews often cite sources that aren't the number one organic result. The job shifts from "rank a link" to "be the answer the model quotes." That rewards content that nails search intent and states the answer plainly and early.

How to become a cited source

  • Lead with the answer. Put a direct, one-sentence answer right under a question-style heading, before any preamble.
  • Structure for machines. Clear headings, short paragraphs, and structured data make your content easy to extract.
  • Earn authority. Models lean on sources the web already trusts, so backlinks and brand mentions still matter.
  • Write snippet-ready summaries. A sharp meta description and a tight opening give the model clean material to lift.
